|
|
I looked, but did not find a thread summarizing this, so I thought I would try to identify:
How many people are maintaining distributions for Microsoft Windows?
How do they differ?
What do people like best/least about each?
I am aware of:
1. http://www.silverex.org
- Seems the most common.
- Requires separate installation of GTK, which can be shared.
- Doesn't always FIND the GTK runtime, which can be fixed by the end user.
- Uses installers for GTK and X-Chat
- Has problems with window sizes and positions on startup.
- Supports plug-ins
2. https://spunge.org/~puto/xchat24.zip
- Self-contained. Includes non-shared GTK.
- Does not need an installer. Just extract and run.
- Does not appear to support plug-ins
- Does not have a problem with window sizes and positions.
I prefer a self-contained distribution that can just be extracted without an installer. The problems with window size and positioning in the SilvereX distribution are somewhat annoying, but it supports plug-ins. Not sure why the latter doesn't support them. It didn't include any, and when I tried copying over the plug-ins directory from my successful SilvereX install, they were not recognized. This wouldn't be too bad, except that I like xtray.
Are there other distributions? Can we consolidate? What do other people prefer about these, or other distributions for Microsoft Windows?

As I said in my initial message: | Noel wrote: | | [The lack of plugin support] wouldn't be too bad, except that I like xtray. |
I'm not concerned about Perl scripting, but I would like the features provoded by xtray. Does supporting the plugin interface require anything special, or just adding perl does? |

i dunno, but when i built it i just noticed the plugins menu wasnt working. i did disable perl, python and tcl because i Don't want to have to install them. gonna look at the mingw toolkit and see if theres anything i can do about it.
I'll keep in touch! |

update: just noticed: if you drop the silverex executable on my xchat build's folder, you can use plugins easily
i'll later create a package with silverex's executable (not in the mood to build another xchat exe, it's a p.i.t.a.) |

| What problems with window sizes and positions? If you don't want X-Chat to run maximized, edit shortcut and select Run: Normal window. |

| my build updated to xchat-gnome 0.2 (using the gtk+ frontend, so it's mostly a slightly patched version of xchat, looks and works just like the regular one) for those that want to try it. |

Did you ever do so? As far as I can see, your xchat-02gnome doesn't support plug-ins. Didn't notice if your 2.4.1 does, but I won't install his distribution (or psyon's) because it uses an installer.
