Future feature: log rotation

What should the default log filename be?

Future feature: log

Postby peterz » 10 Nov 2005 09:03

XChat 2.6.1 will contain a feature that can rotate logs (i.e. log filename changes after some time/date). Although it'll be configurable, what should the default setting be?

%c = Channel name
%n = Network name
%F = date in YYYY-MM-DD format

For example, the first choice in this poll would give you:

2005-11-09/FreeNode-#xchat.log

I'd go for %n/%c/%Y-%m.log

I would suggest an easy Format as default. Most users who didnt customize their logging will probably join only one network. So %F/$n-$c should suffice (IMHO).
Perhaps YYYY-MM/$n-$c would be alternative. Normaly you dont know the exact day, when you wrote something you want to find. (searching over more files (starting form xchat) is more circumstant than open one file and search in that).

Would this feature allow a %W for weeknumber and a Month number/name?

As for default - Wouldn't suggest a daily logfile, too many files.

Of interest to me (and many others) is would logging be selectable for channels? The current 'global' setup is definitely not good.

YYYY-MM/channelORnick.log

Having exact date in directories like that would be meaningless.

After thinking it over, I think I would say the default should be %n-%c-%Y-%m.log . I don't think it would be helpful to have a new log for every day (especially when it comes to small channels and private chats). And I'm not one for extra folders, but I guess %Y-%m/%n-%c.log would be ok, but not as good IMO.

Weekly log rotations could be nice, but I don't really see an ellegant way to using %U, %V, or %W that would make sense to the average user.

I think something like this:

%c/%F/%n-%c.log
logs/#XChat/2719-12-31/FreeNode-#XChat.log

I think this makes the most sense to me because if I go looking through log files, I know what channel I want and maybe the approximate date. If I'm in the same channel on multiple networks I personally cannot usually remember which network the conversation was on, so it's less important as a sort criteria to me.

Maybe an added option would be to have a default of some sort and let the users be able to change it later? :)

Edit: Minor typo fixing :)

A bit late? We're past XChat 2.6.1 (the subject of this post) and up to 2.6.3; the decision was made. :)
