How could I make highlight sound alert little louder and longer so I wouldn't miss them so easily?

You can go to Preferences->Sound and set a sound file for Beep and that should get used instead of the default beep. Just make sure to test it with the Play button first.

MP3/wav should work. Although that depends on the external program that gets used. Wav is probably the safest choice.

On windows you should leave it on Automatic and use a .wav file. With the method set to Automatic the path is also limited to 255 characters.
