Chat history

Postby nodje » 25 Mar 2011 04:58

Hi,

I'm trying to get chat history enabled.
We use an IRC server for our company, we work in a decentralized manner, from several countries in different timezones.

It'd be great tobe able to see what others have been saying when your were off.

So I've tried /set text_relay on, command I've found on the present forum, but it doesn't seem to work as expected.
I'm pretty sure it''s enabled since XChat now displays `Loaded log from Fri Mar 25 13:45:14 2011`

But it doesn't display logs from chat occurring when it was offline.

Do I misunderstand the way text_relay works?
If not, is there a way to get a channel chat history from offline time?

How is your IRC client supposed to receive/log messages while you are offline? Right, it doesn't work. You might want to think about running an IRC client somewhere on a server (with remote desktop/SSH) and connecting to said server to chat. This way, the IRC client will always be running, and you could simply re-connect to the server at a later time and scroll up to read conversation. Alternatively, if the IRC server is run by your company, why not enable global logging server-side, and publish the logs on your internal network via HTTP, for example?

I like your global logging and sharing idea, a good work around.

I'm new to IRC, I really thought my requirement was quite basic.
It makes sense to be willing to see what has happend while your offline, right?

Do you know of any IRC server/client that would emulate that functionality?

cheers

i would recommend to use bnc software for this, preferably this one: http://en.znc.in/wiki/ZNC

Among others, it has also this feature,
Playback Buffers
Stay up-to-date with what happened and when it happened while you were detached, timestamps are also printed and can be manually configured.

You can adjust number of lines to be buffered.. and many other things when connecting through bnc client.
