Logging

Postby cmarlow84 » 10 Apr 2008 22:16

Hi.... I have a question

when logging ( and I log all my chans ) why in my logs I see this :

7:11:09 <-----> April 10th?
17:11:22 <-----> yeah
17:11:26 <-----> Ok take care now :)
**** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Apr 10 17:11:29 2008

**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Apr 10 17:11:29 2008

**** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Apr 10 17:11:35 2008

**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Apr 10 17:11:35 2008

**** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Apr 10 17:11:49 2008

**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Apr 10 17:11:49 2008

**** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Apr 10 17:12:01 2008

**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Apr 10 17:12:01 2008

17:12:12 <------> we know u have get back to HF
17:12:13 <-- -------- has quit (Connection reset by peer)
**** ENDING LOGGING AT Thu Apr 10 17:12:29 2008

the whole:

Start...STOP.....start.....STOP.....start

why is it doing that?

is it suppost to do that?

My log setup is

F:\Christopher\XChat Logs\%Y/%m/%d/%n/%c.txt

Year,month,day,network,chan

Thanks,
CM

These are the times you opened and closed the tabs.

Hmm, it also happens when you're disconnecting/connecting.

When you disconnect from a server, all the opened logs get a "ENDING LOGGING" line, and when you reconnect, get a "BEGIN LOGGING" line.

Sorry if I expressed myself badly at first.

It also happens when you change settings in the preferences dialog. It probably does so just in case you changed some relevant logging settings. Maybe it should be smarter about that.

But then again I got used to have that trash in my log files, I don't really care anymore. :)

I've got the same problem too
For example, here is my status log (when connecting) :
Code: Select all

**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Apr 23 16:28:38 2008

**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Apr 23 16:28:38 2008

*   *** Found your hostname
**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Apr 23 16:28:38 2008

[IDENTD]   Servicing request from 194.242.113.164 [Mickael,1482,6667]
**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Apr 23 16:28:38 2008

*   *** Received identd response
**** BEGIN LOGGING AT Wed Apr 23 16:28:38 2008

*   *** If you are having problems connecting due to ping timeouts, please type /quote pong 51820E65 or /raw pong 51820E65 now.
**** ENDING LOGGING AT Wed Apr 23 16:28:38 2008

This behavior normally occurs when cycling channels.

my guess is only author (zed) can 'solve' this ..

whole logging thing would need to be improved with optional selection of 'what to log' in actual logs.. to avoid creation of this bloated logs with lot of useless entries..

The specific problem mentioned here is only a problem of connection (you disconnect too often), AFAIK.
But yes, it would be useful to be able to customize the verbosity of logs as e.g. on Irssi (http://irssi.org/documentation/startup#c8).
