1. fully functional (risk of bugs is ok)
2. does not risk messing up my config files and data... (firefox 3 beta 2 for example restructures the favorites file, so if you open an earlier version it deletes 90% of the favorites entries as undecipherable junk)
I hope you try it.
If something's not functional, it's probably a new feature you never had in 2.8.5e anyway.
Config files should be 99.5% compatible.
It occurred to me that since I actually thought about the possibility of lost data ahead of time, then it isn't an issue anymore. I simply backed up my user settings and then tried it, if it would have exploded, I would have just restored previous data

I am very happy with it, it works great.
Here is something funny:
Checking your version
Your version: 2.8.7-alpha3
Latest version: 2.8.5e
Recommendation
Your version is not the latest.
Download: xchat-2.8.5e.exe
Not a big deal though, I am using alpha software here. I don't think this warrants a change.
I did notice one bug, and I have some polish suggestions:
1. if I am editing a network and then I close the edit window, xchat will minimize. I think there are a few other things in the settings that when you change xchat minimizes for some reason. This happens only if I press the "..." before closing. That is, if I select "rizon" form the network list and click on edit, and then close, it just closes the window. If I select rizon, click on edit, then "...", then I close the "..." window, then I close the rizon window... at that point it will minimize xchat.
2. When I use the new interface for adding a channel to join it stars with "#channel" and the whole thing is highlighted, that means that if I just start typing it deletes the #, so I have to rehighlight it. Now this is a super minor thing. But it is more of a polish issue. If it started with #channel with only "channel" highlighted then it would be nicer.
3. I cannot double click or click a URL. If I right click it, then it will start on the exact link name (in grey), if I look down in the menu an "open link" and a "copy link" option are available... Is this some security thing to prevent people from accidentally opening harmful links?
4. It would be wonderful if right click menu on a user's name included an "ignore command". It already has kick and ban and the like (if you are an op), but an ignore will help. Would also be neat if it hid the op commands in channels where you are not an op.
5. An option (ideally on by default) to have the transfer tab open in the background. The first file I get causes a window called "transfers" to open and moves focus to it. All subsequent files don't move focus to the transfers window (thankfully). But it would be nice if it opened in background to begin with.
Same with the "DCCChat" window. If I open a DCC chat for the first time after running the program, two new windows will open, one is the actual chat window, and the other is called "DCCChat" and will list the status (active, failed, etc) of all the DCC connections I have. This is the one that currently ends up on top. It should open in the background so I end up in the actual chat window, not in the chat status window.
