Because said distros aren't everyone's favorite.

That said, you may be interested in the following Ubuntu bug reports:

I guess I could have paid more attention to the comments in some of those, as it is worth mentioning that there are .deb files created for XChat 2.8.8 for Lucid i386 and amd64, see the PPA page from Jens Maucher

Glad to see an update. Was hoping for some improvements in the python plugin but I can wait longer I guess :). Just glad to see its still being actively developed. About to compile 2.8.8 for my fedora box and then my windows 7 box. <3 thanks xchat devs.

But there were improvements to the python plugin, the context comparison fix and a leak fix from get_list.

Yes, it is otherwise buggy, but at least you got something.

yes there are those two fixes, but I was hoping for certain improvements that are more important. There are some major stability issues with the plugin that would be extremely nice to see fix. Also the fact that the python plugin doesn't accept the python 2.6 branch without completely recompiling and specifying it. This might be a small task to accomplish for linux users but for Windows users without the experience and tools it can be impossible to make the change. But I digress. I guess I should have been more specific and said I wish there were more improvements.

This is also the case of all the plugins, you can't use the Perl plugin on 5.12 if it was built for 5.8 or 5.10. So Windows users also can't just use any version they want (since no distribution is built with support for 5.12). The difference is that Khisanth does provide builds for this. And there is no active maintainer on Python, but if there were, someone else could release a build of the Python plugin for something newer.

unofficially I've done a compile (not release) of the win32 version of XChat 2.8.8 but if you are looking for minigtk, spell checking you're better off waiting for XChat 2.8.9 (just a guess since the win32 version always seems to be using odd numbers instead of the source version)
