About Windows release licensing.

Discussion about the official XChat for Windows.

Postby subnet » 30 Nov 2005 13:00

Well, I saw that the reason to initially charge for the windows version was because of the added cost of the "tools" needed to compile it. My question is: How many times has the community paid for these "tools"? According to the FAQ posted on the silverex site you can compile xchat for windows with the FREE visual c++ toolkit from Microsoft. The windows OS doesn't cost that much.

Anyway, I don't even care about the GPL or LGPL issues at this point. I am wondering why xchat is holding a .org name when they are clearly a for-profit organization, or should I say a business. That said; Do you have a business license? A whois on the domain looks like you are living in the US. Are you reporting this income to the IRS?

IRS? What's that?

It's a tired old argument regarding a nominal fee beeing asked for the official build of the Windows version of XChat; none of the other so-called free builds have all the features or the stability of the official effort.

PS: I am one of those that paid for a licence.

http://www.icann.org/faq/#regrules

The .org domain, operated by Public Interest Registry, is unrestricted, but was intended to serve the noncommercial community.

He doesn't need a business license for this, check the state laws regarding what requires a license.

As far as the income, sure it should be claimed. It can be claimed as hobby income and any hobby expenses can be deducted from the income earned...such as the cost of hosting the site, any software purchased, computers for compiling, etc.

In short, get a life subnet.

@ subnet & JaY (and anyone else even remotely bemused by this):

You assume the person responsible for the release of XChat lives in a particular country. Such assumptions should never be made.
